أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ الْحَافِظُ أَنْبَأَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ثَنَا زِيَادُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ قَالَ كَتَبَ أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ إِلَى عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ مَرْوَانَ «يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِنِّي قَدْ خَدَمْتُ مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ عَشْرَ سِنِينَ وَأَنَّ الْحَجَّاجَ يَعُدُّنِي مِنْ حَوَكَةِ الْبَصْرَةِ» فَقَالَ

عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ اكْتُبْ إِلَى الْحَجَّاجِ يَا غُلَامُ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ وَيْلَكَ قَدْ خَشِيتُ أَنْ لَا يَصْلُحَ عَلَى يَدِكَ أَحَدٌ فَإِذَا جَاءَكَ كِتَابِي هَذَا فَقُمْ حَتَّى تَعْتَذِرَ إِلَى أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍسكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

✧ Abd al-Malik said, “Write to al-Hajjaj: O boy, woe to you! I feared that no one would be set right at your hands. When this letter of mine reaches you, rise and apologize to Anas b. Malik.” Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
