✧ "Would any of you like to have a garden of date palms and grapevines, with rivers flowing beneath it, in which he has every kind of fruit?" [al-Baqarah 266] up to here: "Then a whirlwind with fire struck it and it was burned." [al-Baqarah 266] He asked the people about it and said: "In your opinion, was it revealed about 'Would any of you like to have a garden'?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." 'Umar became angry and said: "Say: 'We know,' or 'We do not know.'" Ibn 'Abbas said: "I have something in my mind about it, O Commander of the Believers." He said: "O son of my brother, speak and do not belittle yourself." Ibn 'Abbas said: "It was struck as a parable for a deed." 'Umar said: "For a wealthy man who does good deeds, then Allah sends Satan to him and he commits sins until he drowns all his deeds. He had a garden, and it burned when he was most in need of it, when children were many and he had reached old age." He said: "Would any of you like to meet the Day of Resurrection as a servant most in need of his deed, with nothing to show for it?"
