✧ I saw a gathering of Ibn Abbas such that if all of Quraysh had boasted of it, it would have been a source of pride for them. I saw the people assemble until the road became too narrow for them, and no one could come or go. He said: I entered upon him and informed him that they were as if at his door. He said to me, 'Prepare for me water for ablution.' He performed ablution and sat down, then said to me, 'Go out and tell them: Whoever wishes to ask about the Qur'an and its letters and what he intends from it, let him enter.' I went out and informed them, and they entered until they filled the house and the room. They did not ask him about anything except that he informed them about it and added for them the like of what they asked or more. Then he said, 'Your brothers.' So they left. Then he said to me, 'Go out and say: Whoever wishes to ask about the lawful and the unlawful and jurisprudence, let him enter.' I went out and told them, and they entered until they filled the house and the room. They did not ask him about anything except that he informed them about it and added for them the like of it. Then he said, 'Your brothers.' So they left. Then he said to me, 'Go out and say: Whoever wishes to ask about the obligatory shares of inheritance and what resembles them, let him enter.' I went out and informed them, and they entered until they filled the house and the room. They did not ask him about anything except that he informed them about it and added for them the like of it. Then he said, 'Your brothers.' So they left. Then he said to me, 'Go out and say: Whoever wishes to ask about Arabic, poetry, and unusual expressions in speech, let him enter.' He said: So they entered until they filled the house and the room. They did not ask him about anything except that he informed them about it and added for them the like of it. Abu Salih said: If all of Quraysh had boasted of that, it would have been a source of pride for them. He said: I have not seen the like of this for anyone among the people. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
