أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الصَّفَّارُ ثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ثَنَا مُسَدَّدُ بْنُ مُسَرْهَدٍ ثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ أَبِي يُونُسَ وَهُوَ حَاتِمُ بْنُ أَبِي صَغِيرَةَ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنْ أَبِي كُرَيْبٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ
أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ فَقُمْتُ وَرَاءَهُ فَأَخَذَنِي فَأَقَامَنِي حِذَاءَهُ فَلَمَّا أَقْبَلَ عَلَى صَلَاتِهِ انْخَنَسْتُ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ «مَا لَكَ؟ أَجْعَلُكَ حِذَائِي فَتَخْنِسُ» قُلْتُ مَا يَنْبَغِي لِأَحَدٍ أَنْ يُصَلِّي حِذَاءَكَ وَأَنْتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَأَعْجَبَهُ فَدَعَا اللَّهَ أَنْ يَزِيدَنِي فَهْمًا وَعِلْمًا

✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was praying at the end of the night, and I stood behind him. He took me and made me stand beside him. When he turned back to his prayer, I moved back. When he finished, he said, "What is the matter with you? I make you stand beside me and you move back?" I said, "It is not proper for anyone to pray beside you while you are the Messenger of Allah." This pleased him, and he supplicated to Allah to increase me in understanding and knowledge.
