حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حَمْشَاذَ الْعَدْلُ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرِ بْنِ مَطَرٍ ثَنَا أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فِرَاسٍ الصَّيْرَفِيُّ ثَنَا سَلْمُ بْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ نَبْهَانَ حَدَّثَنِي سَلَّامُ أَبُو عِيسَى ثَنَا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ الْمُعَطَّلِ السُّلَمِيُّ قَالَ
خَرَجْنَا حُجَّاجًا فَلَمَّا كُنَّا بِالْعَرْجِ إِذَا نَحْنُ بِحَيَّةٍ تَضْطَرِبُ فَلَمْ تَلْبَثْ أَنْ مَاتَتْ فَأَخْرَجَ لَهَا رَجُلٌ مِنَّا خِرْقَةً مِنْ عَيْبَتِهِ لَهُ فَلَفَّهَا فِيهَا وَغَيَّبَهَا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَدَفَنَهَا ثُمَّ قَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ فَإِنَّا لَبِالْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ إِذْ وَقَفَ عَلَيْنَا شَخْصٌ فَقَالَ أَيُّكُمْ صَاحِبُ عَمْرِو بْنِ جَابِرٍ؟ فَقُلْنَا مَا نَعْرِفُ عَمْرَو بْنَ جَابِرٍ قَالَ أَيُّكُمْ صَاحِبُ الْجَانِّ؟ قَالُوا هَذَا قَالَ أَمَا أَنَّهُ جَزَاكَ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا أَمَا أَنَّهُ قَدْ كَانَ آخِرَ التِّسْعَةِ مَوْتًا الَّذِينَ أَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَسْتَمِعُونَ الْقُرْآنَ سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

✧ We set out as pilgrims. When we were at al-'Arj, we came upon a snake writhing. It did not take long before it died. A man among us took out a piece of cloth from his saddlebag, wrapped it in it, hid it in the ground, and buried it. Then we arrived in Makkah. While we were in the Sacred Mosque, a person stood before us and said: 'Which of you is the companion of 'Amr b. Jabir?' We said: 'We do not know 'Amr b. Jabir.' He said: 'Which of you is the companion of the jinni?' They said: 'This one.' He said: 'May Allah reward you well. He was the last of the nine to die, those who came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to listen to the Qur'an.'" Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
