كَمَا حَدَّثَنَاهُ جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ نُصَيْرٍ الْخُلْدِيِّ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ الْمِقْدَامِ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي هَانِئِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ

أَنَّهُ وَفَدَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَسَمِعَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُكَنُّونَهُ بِأَبِي الْحَكَمِ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْحَكَمُ لِمَ تُكَنَّى بِأَبِي الْحَكَمِ؟» قَالَ إِنَّ قَوْمِي إِذَا اخْتَلَفُوا حَكَمْتُ بَيْنَهُمْ فَرَضِيَ الْفَرِيقَانِ قَالَ «هَلْ لَكَ وَلَدٌ؟» قَالَ شُرَيْحٌ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَمُسْلِمٌ بَنُو هَانِئٍ قَالَ «فَمَنْ أَكْبَرُهُمْ؟» قَالَ شُرَيْحٌ قَالَ «فَأَنْتَ أَبُو شُرَيْحٍ فَدَعَا لَهُ وَلِوَلَدِهِ» «وَقَدْ ذَكَرْتُ فِي كِتَابِ الْمَعْرِفَةِ فِي ذِكْرِ الْمُخَضْرَمِينَ شُرَيْحَ بْنَ هَانِئٍ فَإِنَّهُ أَدْرَكَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةَ وَالْإِسْلَامَ وَلَمْ يَرَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَصَارَ عِدَادُهُ فِي التَّابِعِينَ» سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

✧ He came as a delegate to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Prophet ﷺ heard him being addressed by the kunya Abu al-Hakam, so he said: "Allah is al-Hakam (the Judge); why are you given the kunya Abu al-Hakam?" He said: "When my people disagree, I judge between them and both parties are satisfied." He said: "Do you have children?" He said: "Shurayh, 'Abd Allah, and Muslim, the sons of Hani'." He said: "Which of them is the eldest?" He said: "Shurayh." He said: "Then you are Abu Shurayh." And he supplicated for him and his children. [I have mentioned in the Book of Knowledge, in the mention of the mukhadramun, Shurayh b. Hani', for he lived through the pre-Islamic era and Islam, and he never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he is counted among the Followers.] Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
