✧ Yazid b. Shajara al-Rahawi, who was one of the commanders of al-Sham and whom Mu'awiya used to appoint over the armies, delivered a sermon to us one day and said: O people, remember the blessing of Allah upon you. If you could see what I see of black and red and green and white, and in the saddles what is in them: when the prayer is established, the gates of heaven, the gates of Paradise, and the gates of Hell are opened, and the houris are adorned and look forth. When one of them turns his face toward the fighting, they say: O Allah, make him firm; O Allah, grant him victory. When he turns back, they veil themselves from him and say: O Allah, forgive him; O Allah, have mercy on him. So strike the faces of the enemy, may my father and mother be your ransom. For when one of you advances, the first gush of his blood removes his sins as leaves fall from a tree, and two of the wide-eyed houris descend to him and wipe the dust from his face. He says to them: I am for you, and they say: We are for you. And he is clothed with one hundred garments; if they were placed between these two fingers of mine—meaning the index and middle fingers—they would fit, not of the weaving of the children of Adam but of the garments of Paradise. You are recorded with Allah by your names, your marks, your adornments, your private conversations, and your gatherings. On the Day of Resurrection it will be said: O so-and-so, this is your light; and O so-and-so, you have no light. Hell has a shore like the shore of the sea, in which are creeping creatures and serpents like palm trees and scorpions like mules. When the people of Hell cry out for relief, it is said: Go out to the shore. They go out, and the creeping creatures seize their lips and faces and whatever Allah wills, and they strip them. They cry out, fleeing from them back to the Fire. And mange is inflicted upon them, so that one of them scratches his skin until the bone appears. One of them says: O so-and-so, does this harm you? He says: Yes. He says: That is because you used to harm the believers.
