✧ Huwaytib b. 'Abd al-'Uzza lived one hundred and twenty years: sixty in the Jahiliyya and sixty in Islam. When Marwan b. al-Hakam became governor of Madinah in his first year, Huwaytib entered upon him with venerable elders: Hakim b. Hizam and Makhrama b. Nawfal. They conversed in his presence and dispersed. Then Huwaytib entered upon him one day after that and conversed with him. Marwan said to him, 'What is the matter with you?' He told him. Marwan said to him, 'Your acceptance of Islam was delayed, O Shaykh, until the young ones preceded you.' Huwaytib said, 'By Allah, I intended to embrace Islam more than once, but each time your father prevented me and forbade me, saying: Would you abandon the nobility of your people and the religion of your forefathers for a new religion and become its follower?!' He said: So Marwan fell silent and regretted what he had said to him. Then Huwaytib said, 'Did not 'Uthman tell you what he met from your father when he embraced Islam?' Marwan's distress increased. Then Huwaytib said, 'There was no one among the elders of Quraysh who remained upon the religion of their people until Makkah was conquered who was more averse to what it was conquered upon than I, but the decrees [of Allah prevail]. I witnessed Badr with the polytheists and saw a lesson: I saw the angels killing and taking captives between the heaven and the earth. I said: This is a man who is protected. When what I saw at Uhud was mentioned, we fled back to Makkah and stayed there, while Quraysh embraced Islam one man after another. When the day of al-Hudaybiyya came, I attended and witnessed the treaty, and I worked for it until it was completed. All of that while Islam increased, and Allah ﷻ willed only what He willed. When we wrote the treaty of al-Hudaybiyya, I was the last of its witnesses, and I said: Quraysh will see from Muhammad only what displeases her. She has accepted to defend herself with spears. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came for the 'Umra of al-Qada' and Quraysh left Makkah, I was among those who stayed behind in Makkah, I and Suhayl b. 'Amr, so that we might expel the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when the time elapsed. When the three days ended, Suhayl b. 'Amr and I approached and said: Your condition has elapsed, so leave our land. He called out: O Bilal, let not the sun set while any Muslim who came with us remains in Makkah.'
