أَخْبَرَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْمُقْرِئُ بِبَغْدَادَ ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْبَرِيدِيُّ ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ أَبَى شَيْخٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ ثنا أَبُو مِخْنَفٍ
أَنَّ هَدِيَّةَ بْنَ فَيَّاضٍ الْأَعْوَرَ أَمَرَ بِقَتْلِ حُجْرِ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ فَمَشَى إِلَيْهِ بِالسَّيْفِ فَارْتَعَدَتْ فَرَائِصُهُ فَقَالَ يَا حُجْرُ أَلَيْسَ زَعَمْتَ أَنَّكَ لَا تَجْزَعُ مِنَ الْمَوْتِ فَإِنَّا نَدَعُكَ فَقَالَ «وَمَا لِي لَا أَجْزَعُ وَأَنَا أَرَى قَبْرًا مَحْفُورًا وَكَفَنًا مَنْشُورًا وَسَيْفًا مَشْهُورًا وَإِنَّنِي وَاللَّهِ لَنْ أَقُولَ مَا يُسْخِطُ الرَّبَّ» قَالَ فَقَتَلَهُ وَذَلِكَ فِي شَعْبَانَ سَنَةَ إِحْدَى وَخَمْسِينَسكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

✧ Hadiya b. Fayyad al-A'war ordered the killing of Hujr b. 'Adi, so he walked to him with a sword, and his sides trembled. He said, 'O Hujr, did you not claim that you would not show fear of death? We will leave you.' He said, 'Why would I not show fear when I see a dug grave, a spread shroud, and an unsheathed sword? But by Allah, I will never say what displeases the Lord.' He said, 'Then he killed him, and that was in Sha'ban of the year 51.'
