حَدَّثَنَا الْإِمَامُ أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ قُرَيْشٍ قَالَا ثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ثَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ ثَابِتِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ قَالَ قَالَ
لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَتُحْسِنُ السُّرْيَانِيَّةَ؟» فَقُلْتُ لَا قَالَ «فَتَعَلَّمْهَا فَإِنَّهُ يَأْتِينَا كُتُبٌ» فَتَعَلَّمْتُهَا فِي سَبْعَةَ عَشَرَ يَوْمًا قَالَ الْأَعْمَشُ «كَانَتْ تَأْتِيَهُ كُتُبٌ لَا يَشْتَهِي أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ عَلَيْهَا إِلَّا مَنْ يَثِقُ بِهِ» صَحِيحٌ إِنْ كَانَ ثَابِتُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ سَمِعَهُ مِنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ صحيح إن كان ثابت سمعه من زيد

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: “Do you know Syriac?” I said: “No.” He said: “Then learn it, for letters come to us.” So I learned it in seventeen days. Al-A'mash said: “Letters used to come to him that he did not want anyone to read except someone he trusted.” It is authentic if Thabit b. Ubayd heard it from Zayd b. Thabit, but they did not record it. Authentic if Thabit heard it from Zayd.
