✧ We had a Jewish neighbor among the Banu Abd al-Ashhal. One day he came out of his house and stood before the Banu Abd al-Ashhal. Salamah said: “I was at that time a young boy, wearing a burdah of mine, lying in it in the courtyard of my family. He mentioned the Resurrection, the rising, the reckoning, the scales, Paradise, and Hell.” He said: He said that regarding the people of Yathrib, while the people were idol worshippers and did not believe in any resurrection after death. They said to him: Woe to you! Do you think this will happen, O so-and-so? That people will be raised after their death to a Garden and a Fire, and they will be requited therein for their deeds? He said: Yes, by the One by whom I swear. They said: O so-and-so, woe to you! What is the sign of that? He said: A prophet sent from the direction of this land—and he pointed with his hand toward Makkah. They said: And when will we see him? He said: He looked at me, and I was the youngest of them in age, and said: If this boy lives out his lifespan, he will meet him. Salamah said: “By Allah, night and day had not passed before Allah, Blessed and Exalted, sent the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he was alive among us. We believed in him, but he disbelieved out of envy and jealousy.” We said to him: Woe to you, O so-and-so! Were you not the one who told us about him what you told? He said: Yes, but it is not him.
