حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَوْفِ بْنِ سُفْيَانَ ثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ عَبْدُ الْقُدُّوسِ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ ثَنَا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ قَالَ
انْطَلَقَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ حَتَّى دَخَلْنَا كَنِيسَةَ الْيَهُودِ فَقَالَ «يَا مَعْشَرَ الْيَهُودِ أَرُونِي اثْنَيْ عَشَرَ رَجُلًا يَشْهَدُونَ أَنَّ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ يَحُطُّ اللَّهُ عَنْ كُلِّ يَهُودِيٍّ تَحْتَ أَدِيمِ السَّمَاءِ الْغَضَبَ الَّذِي غَضِبَ عَلَيْهِمْ» قَالَ فَأُسْكِتُوا مَا أَجَابَهُ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدٌ ثُمَّ رَدَّ عَلَيْهِمْ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدٌ فَقَالَ «أَبَيْتُمْ فَوَاللَّهِ لَأَنَا الْحَاشِرُ وَأَنَا الْعَاقِبُ وَأَنَا النَّبِيُّ الْمُصْطَفَى آمَنْتُمْ أَوْ كَذَبْتُمْ» ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ حَتَّى كِدْنَا أَنْ نَخْرُجَ فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ خَلْفِنَا يَقُولُ كَمَا أَنْتَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فَقَالَ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ أَيُّ رَجُلٍ تَعْلِمُونِي فِيكُمْ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْيَهُودِ؟ قَالُوا وَاللَّهِ مَا نَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ فِينَا رَجُلٌ أَعْلَمُ بِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ مِنْكَ وَلَا أَفْقَهُ مِنْكَ وَلَا مِنْ أَبِيكَ قَبْلَكَ وَلَا مِنْ جَدِّكَ قَبْلَ أَبِيكَ قَالَ فَإِنِّي أَشْهَدُ لَهُ بِاللَّهِ أَنَّهُ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ الَّذِي تَجِدُونَهُ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ فَقَالُوا كَذَبْتَ ثُمَّ رَدُّوا عَلَيْهِ قَوْلَهُ وَقَالُوا فِيهِ شَرًّا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «كَذَبْتُمْ لَنْ يُقْبَلَ قَوْلُكُمْ أَمَّا آنِفًا فَتُثْنُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ مَا أَثْنَيْتُمْ وَأَمَّا إِذَا آمَنَ فَكَذَّبْتُمُوهُ وَقُلْتُمْ فِيهِ مَا قُلْتُمْ فَلَنْ يُقْبَلَ قَوْلُكُمْ» قَالَ فَخَرَجْنَا وَنَحْنُ ثَلَاثَةٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ وَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِيهِ {قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ كَانَ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ وَكَفَرْتُمْ بِهِ} [الأحقاف 10] الْآيَةَ «صَحِيحٌ عَلَى شَرْطِ الشَّيْخَيْنِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ إِنَّمَا اتَّفَقَا عَلَى حَدِيثِ حُمَيْدٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَيُّ رَجُلٍ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ فِيكُمْ مُخْتَصَرًا» على شرط البخاري ومسلم

✧ The Prophet ﷺ set out while I was with him until we entered the synagogue of the Jews. He said, "O assembly of Jews, show me twelve men who testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Allah will remove from every Jew under the surface of the sky the wrath that has fallen upon them." They fell silent, and no one answered him. Then he repeated it to them, and no one answered him. He said, "You refuse. By Allah, I am the Gatherer, I am the Final Prophet, and I am the Chosen Prophet, whether you believe or reject." Then he left, and I was with him, until we were about to go out. Then a man from behind us said, "Stay where you are, O Muhammad." That man said, "What kind of man do you know me to be among you, O assembly of Jews?" They said, "By Allah, we do not know that there has ever been among us a man more knowledgeable in the Book of Allah than you, nor more understanding than you, nor than your father before you, nor than your grandfather before your father." He said, "Then I bear witness to him by Allah that he is the Prophet of Allah whom you find in the Torah." They said, "You have lied." Then they rejected his statement and spoke evil of him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You have lied. Your statement will never be accepted. Just now you praised him with the good you mentioned, but when he believed, you called him a liar and said about him what you said. Your statement will never be accepted." So we went out, and we were three: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, myself, and 'Abd Allah b. Salam. And Allah, Exalted be He, revealed concerning him {Say: Have you considered if it is from Allah and you disbelieve in it} [al-Ahqaf 10] - the verse. "Sahih according to the conditions of the two shaykhs, but they did not include it. They only agreed on the hadith of Humayd from Anas: 'What kind of man is 'Abd Allah b. Salam among you?' in abbreviated form." According to the conditions of al-Bukhari and Muslim.
