✧ And I saw him, and the dearest of gatherings to him was the emptiest one, while he was striking his beard against his chest. I said to him: "O Abu Muhammad, I see you, and the dearest of gatherings to you is the emptiest one, and you are striking your beard against your chest. Do you dislike this day? Then leave it, for no one compels you to it." He said: "O Alqama b. Waqqas, do not blame me. We were one hand against those besides us, but today they have become two mountains, one of us creeping toward the other. However, I had something to do with the affair of Uthman for which I see no expiation except that my blood be shed in seeking his blood." I said: "And Muhammad b. Talha, why do you bring him out while you have small children? Leave him, so that if something happens, he may succeed you in your estate." He said: "He knows better. I dislike to see anyone who has an intention in this matter and then I would prevent him." Then I spoke with Muhammad b. Talha about staying behind, and he said: "I dislike to ask the baggage about my father."
