حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثَنَا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ثَنَا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثَنَا سُكَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ حَدَّثَنِي شَيْخٌ قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا مِنَ الْمَوْصِلِ قَالَ

صَحِبْتُ الزُّبَيْرَ بْنَ الْعَوَّامِ فِي بَعْضِ أَسْفَارِهِ فَأَصَابَتْهُ جَنَابَةٌ فِي أَرْضٍ قَفْرٍ فَقَالَ «اسْتُرْنِي» فَسَتَرْتُهُ فَحَانَتْ مِنِّي الْتِفَاتَةٌ إِلَيْهِ فَرَأَيْتُهُ مُجَدَّعًا بِالسُّيُوفِ فَقُلْتُ وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ بِكَ آثَارًا مَا رَأَيْتُهَا بِأَحَدٍ قَطُّ فَقَالَ «وَقَدْ رَأَيْتَ ذَاكَ؟» فَقَالَ «وَاللَّهِ مَا مِنْهَا جِرَاحَةٌ إِلَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ» سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

✧ I accompanied al-Zubayr b. al-'Awwam on one of his journeys, and he became junub in a barren land. He said, 'Cover me.' So I covered him, and I happened to glance at him and saw him scarred by swords. I said, 'By Allah, I have seen marks on you that I have never seen on anyone else.' He said, 'Have you seen that? By Allah, there is no wound among them except it was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the path of Allah.' Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
