✧ The Byzantines marched against Habib b. Maslama while he was in Armenia. He wrote to Mu'awiya asking for reinforcements. Mu'awiya wrote to 'Uthman about that, and 'Uthman wrote to the commander of Iraq ordering him to reinforce Habib. He reinforced him with the people of Iraq and appointed over them Salman b. Rabi'a al-Bahili. They set out intending to aid Habib, but they did not reach them until he and his companions had met the enemy and Allah granted them victory. When Salman and his companions arrived at Habib's, they asked them to share in the spoils, saying, 'We reinforced you.' The people of Syria said, 'You did not witness the fighting; you have no share with us.' Habib refused to share with them, and he and his companions kept their spoils. The people of Syria and the people of Iraq disputed over that until it almost led to fighting between them. Some of the people of Iraq said, 'If you kill Salman, we will kill your Habib, and if you go to Ibn 'Affan, we will go.'
