✧ Abu al-Darda' was Uwaymir b. Zayd b. Qays b. Khunasah b. Umayyah b. Malik b. Amir b. Adi b. Ka'b b. al-Khazraj b. al-Harith b. al-Khazraj. It is said that the name of Abu al-Darda' was Amir, but it was made diminutive, so he was called Uwaymir. His mother was Muhibbah bt. Waqid b. Amr b. al-Aznabah b. Amir b. Zayd Manat b. Malik b. Tha'labah b. Ka'b. Abu al-Darda' was, as mentioned, the last of his household to accept Islam. He continued to cling to an idol of his, over which he had placed a cloth. Abdullah b. Rawahah used to invite him to Islam, but he refused. Then Abdullah b. Rawahah came to him, for he was his brother in the pre-Islamic era, regarding Islam. When he saw that he had gone out of his house, he went in instead, entered his house, and hurried his wife while she was combing her hair. He said, 'Where is Abu al-Darda'?' She said, 'Your brother went out a little while ago and entered his house where the idol was, and with him was an adze. He took it down and began to chop it into pieces, piece by piece, while he was reciting rajaz secretly against all the names of the devils: Indeed, everything that is called upon besides God is false.' Then he went out, and his wife heard the sound of the adze as he was striking that idol. She said, 'You have destroyed me, O Ibn Rawahah.' He went out after that. It was not long before Abu al-Darda' came to his dwelling and entered. He found the woman sitting and weeping out of fear for him. He said, 'What is the matter with you?' She said, 'Your brother Abdullah b. Rawahah entered upon me and did what you see.' He became very angry, then he thought to himself and said, 'If there were any good in this, it would have defended itself.' So he went until he came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and with him was Ibn Rawahah, and he became a Muslim. It is said that the Messenger of God ﷺ looked at Abu al-Darda' while the people were fleeing in every direction on the day of Uhud and said, 'What an excellent horseman Uwaymir is, except that he is not a transient.' Ibn Umar said, 'I heard someone mention that Abu al-Darda' did not witness Uhud, but he was among the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he witnessed many battles with him.' Ibn Umar said, 'Abu al-Darda' died in Damascus in the year thirty-two, during the caliphate of Uthman b. Affan.'
