أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ ثَنَا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْإِسْكَنْدَرَانِيُّ بِمِصْرَ ثَنَا أَبُو يَحْيَى الضَّرِيرُ زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْبَصْرِيُّ ثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِلْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ إِنِّي
سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «نَزِيِدُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ» وَدَارُكَ قُرَيْبَةٌ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ فَأَعْطِنَاهَا نَزِدْهَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَاقْطَعْ لَكَ أَوْسَعَ مِنْهَا قَالَ لَا أَفْعَلُ قَالَ إِذًا أَغْلِبُكَ عَلَيْهَا قَالَ لَيْسَ ذَاكَ لَكَ فَاجْعَلْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكَ مَنْ يَقْضِي بِالْحَقِّ قَالَ وَمَنْ هُوَ؟ قَالَ حُذَيْفَةُ بْنُ الْيَمَانِ قَالَ فَجَاءُوا إِلَى حُذَيْفَةَ فَقَصُّوا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ حُذَيْفَةُ عِنْدِي فِي هَذَا خَبَرُ قَالَ وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ إِنَّ دَاوُدَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَزِيدَ فِي بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ وَقَدْ كَانَ بَيْتٌ قَرِيبٌ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ لِيَتِيمٍ فَطَلَبَ إِلَيْهِ فَأَبَى فَأَرَادَ دَاوُدُ أَنْ يَأْخُذَهَا مِنْهُ فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ ﷻ إِلَيْهِ إِنَّ أَنْزَهَ الْبُيُوتِ عَنِ الظُّلْمِ لِبَيْتِي قَالَ فَتَرَكَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْعَبَّاسُ فَبَقِيَ شَيْءٌ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَدَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ فَإِذَا مِيزَابٌ لِلْعَبَّاسِ شَارِعٌ فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِيَسِيلَ مَاءُ الْمَطَرِ مِنْهُ فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بِيَدِهِ فَقَلَعَ الْمِيزَابَ فَقَالَ هَذَا الْمِيزَابُ لَا يَسِيلُ فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْعَبَّاسُ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَ مُحَمَّدًا بِالْحَقِّ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الَّذِي وَضَعَ الْمِيزَابَ فِي هَذَا الْمَكَانِ وَنَزَعْتَهُ أَنْتَ يَا عُمَرُ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ضَعْ رِجْلَيْكَ عَلَى عُنُقِي لِتَرُدَّهُ إِلَى مَا كَانَ هَذَا فَفَعَلَ ذَلِكَ الْعَبَّاسُ ثُمَّ قَالَ الْعَبَّاسُ قَدْ أَعْطَيْتُكَ الدَّارَ تَزِيدُهَا فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَزَادَهَا عُمَرُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ثُمَّ قَطَعَ لِلْعَبَّاسِ دَارًا أَوْسَعَ مِنْهَا بِالزَّوْرَاءِ

✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "We are expanding the mosque," and your house is close to the mosque, so give it to us to expand the mosque with it, and I will grant you a larger one instead. He said, "I will not do it." He said, "Then I will take it from you by force." He said, "That is not for you. So appoint between me and you someone who judges by the truth." He said, "And who is he?" He said, "Ḥudhayfah b. al-Yamān." He said, so they came to Ḥudhayfah and told him the story. Ḥudhayfah said, "I have knowledge about this." He said, "And what is that?" He said, "Indeed, the Prophet Dāwūd, may Allah's blessings be upon him, wanted to expand the Bayt al-Maqdis, and there was a house near the mosque belonging to an orphan. He requested it from him, but he refused. Dāwūd wanted to take it from him, but Allah ﷻ revealed to him: 'The most pure of houses from wrongdoing is My house.'" He said, so he left it. Then al-ʿAbbās said to him, "Is there anything left?" He said, "No." He said, so he entered the mosque, and there was a water spout belonging to al-ʿAbbās, protruding into the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so that rainwater would flow from it into the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ʿUmar said with his hand, and he pulled out the water spout, saying, "This water spout will not flow into the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Al-ʿAbbās said to him, "By the One who sent Muḥammad with the truth, it was he who placed the water spout in this place, and you, O ʿUmar, have removed it." ʿUmar said, "Place your feet on my neck to restore it to what it was." So al-ʿAbbās did that. Then al-ʿAbbās said, "I have given you the house to expand the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with it." So ʿUmar expanded the mosque with it, then granted al-ʿAbbās a house larger than it in al-Zawrāʾ.
