✧ Mu'adh b. Jabal was one of the most handsome people in face, the best in character, and the most generous with what he had. He incurred a large debt, and his creditors pressed him until he hid from them for some days in his house. His creditors sought help from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for Mu'adh, calling him. He came with his creditors. They said, “O Messenger of Allah, take our rights from him.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “May Allah have mercy on whoever gives charity to him.” Some people gave him charity, but others refused and said, “O Messenger of Allah, take our rights from him.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Be patient with them, O Mu'adh.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stripped him of his property and gave it to his creditors, and they divided it among themselves. They received five-sevenths of their rights. They said, “O Messenger of Allah, sell him for us.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Leave him alone, for you have no way against him.” Mu'adh went to Banu Salamah. Someone said to him, “O Abu Abd al-Rahman, if only you had asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for today you have become destitute.” He said, “I would not ask him.” He stayed for some days, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him and sent him to Yemen, saying: “Perhaps Allah will restore you and pay off your debt on your behalf.” Mu'adh went to Yemen and remained there until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died. He arrived in the year in which Umar b. al-Khattab performed Hajj in Makkah. Abu Bakr had appointed him over the Hajj. They met on the Day of Tarwiyah there, embraced, and each consoled the other for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then they sat on the ground talking. Umar saw servants with Mu'adh and said, “Who are these?” Then he mentioned the words which I mentioned previously. Al-Dhahabi omitted this from the summary due to its weakness.
