✧ We entered upon Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah to visit him, and his wife was sitting thin at his head while he faced the wall. We said to her, "How did Abu Ubaidah pass the night?" She said, "He passed the night with reward." He turned his face toward us and said, "I did not pass the night with reward." Then he said, "Will you not ask me about what I said?" We said, "We were not amazed by what you said, so we would ask you about it." He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Whoever spends an expenditure in the path of Allah, it is multiplied seven hundred times. And whoever spends on himself and his family, or visits a sick person, or anything more, the good deed is multiplied ten times. Fasting is a shield as long as it is not rent. And whoever Allah tests with an affliction in his body, it is an expiation for him.'"
