✧ When Abu Ubaidah was struck by the plague, he said, "O Muadh, lead the people in prayer." So Muadh led the people in prayer. Then Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah died. Muadh stood among the people and said, "O people, turn to Allah in sincere repentance from your sins. A servant does not meet Allah repentant from his sin except that it is incumbent upon Allah to forgive him." Then he said, "O people, you have been afflicted by the loss of a man. By Allah, I do not claim that I have ever seen among the servants of Allah a servant less complaining, more pure-hearted, farther from malice, more loving of the Hereafter, or more sincere in advising the common people than him. So ask mercy for him; may Allah have mercy on him." Then he said, "Come out to pray over him, for by Allah, no one like him will ever be placed over you again." The people gathered, and Abu Ubaidah was brought out. Muadh came forward and prayed over him. When he was brought to his grave, Muadh b. Jabal, Amr b. al-As, and al-Dahhak b. Qais entered his grave. When they placed him in his niche and came out, they poured earth over him. Muadh b. Jabal said, "O Abu Ubaidah, I will praise you and not speak falsely, fearing that wrath from Allah might befall me for it. By Allah, as far as I know, you were among those who remember Allah much, among those who walk humbly on the earth, and when the ignorant address them, they say, 'Peace,' and among those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor stingy, but between that is a just balance. By Allah, you were among the humble, the meek, who show mercy to the orphan and the needy and detest the treacherous and the arrogant."
