حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عِيسَى ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ قَالَ

قَالَ عُمَرُ لِأَصْحَابِهِ «تَمَنَّوْا» فَجَعَلَ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ يَتَمَنَّى شَيْئًا فَقَالَ «لَكِنِّي أَتَمَنَّى بَيْتًا مَمْلُوءًا رِجَالًا مِثْلَ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ بْنِ الْجَرَّاحِ» فَقَالُوا لَهُ مَا أَلَوْتَ الْإِسْلَامَ خَيْرًا قَالَ «ذَلِكَ أَرَدْتُ»

Translation

✧ Umar said to his companions, "Wish for something." Each man among them began to wish for something. He said, "But I wish for a house full of men like Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah." They said to him, "You have not spared Islam any good." He said, "That is what I intended."
