✧ What we have is better for them. They agreed until he carried Jabalah and Asma' and left Zayd behind. Then horsemen from Tihamah, from Banu Fazarah, came and raided Tayyi', capturing Zayd and taking him to the market of 'Ukaz. The Prophet ﷺ saw him before he was sent, and said to Khadijah: "O Khadijah, I saw in the market a boy of such and such description," describing intelligence, manners, and beauty. "If I had money, I would buy him." She instructed Waraqah b. Nawfal, and he purchased him with her money. He said: "O Khadijah, give me this boy willingly." She said: O Muhammad, I see a handsome boy, and I fear you may sell him or give him away. The Prophet ﷺ said: "O blessed one, I only intend to adopt him as a son." She said: Yes, O Muhammad. So he raised him and adopted him, and he was called Zayd b. Muhammad. Then a man from the tribe came and looked at Zayd and recognized him. He said: You are Zayd b. Harithah. He said: No, I am Zayd b. Muhammad. He said: No, rather you are Zayd b. Harithah, from the description of your father and your paternal uncles and maternal uncles, such and such. They have exhausted their bodies and spent their wealth in seeking you. Zayd said: [al-tawil] I long for my people even though I am far away, for I am a resident of the House near the sacred sites. And restrain yourselves from the way that has grieved you, and do not act in the land like wild camels. For I, by Allah's praise, am in the best of families, the choice of Ma'add, generation after generation. Harithah said, when it reached him: [al-tawil] I wept for Zayd and did not know what happened to him. Is he alive, to be hoped for, or has death come upon him? By Allah, I do not know, though I ask: Did the plain swallow you or the mountain? Would that I knew if time would bring you back, for my sufficiency from this world is your return to me. The sun reminds me of him at its rising, and his memory comes to me when the evening darkens. And when the winds blow, they stir his memory, so how long are my sorrows for him, and how great my fear! I will exert the camels' utmost in the land, and I will not tire of wandering unless the camels tire. So that he may come, or my death may come to me, for every man perishes even if hope deceives him. Harithah b. Sharahil came to Makkah with his brothers and family, and he came to the Prophet ﷺ in the courtyard of the Ka'bah among a group of his companions, including Zayd b. Harithah. When they looked at Zayd, they recognized him and he recognized them, but he did not get up for them out of respect for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They said to him: O Zayd, but he did not answer them. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: "Who are these, O Zayd?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, this is my father, this is my paternal uncle, this is my brother, and these are my kin. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: "Get up and greet them, O Zayd." He got up and greeted them, and they greeted him. Then they said to him: Come with us, O Zayd. He said: I do not want a substitute for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, nor anyone else. They said: O Muhammad, we will give you blood money for this boy, so name whatever you wish, and we will bring it to you. He said: "I ask you to bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that I am the seal of His prophets and messengers, and I will send him with you." They hesitated, wavered, and stammered, then said: Will you accept from us what we offered of dinars? He said to them: "Here is another matter: I have placed the affair in his hands. If he wishes, let him get up, and if he wishes, let him enter." They said: Is there anything left? They said: O Zayd, Muhammad has now permitted you, so go with us. He said: Far be it, far be it! I do not want a substitute for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, nor do I prefer over him any father or son. They tried to persuade him, coax him, and appeal to his sympathy, and they told him of their longing for him, but he refused and swore that he would not follow them. Harithah said: As for me, I will support you with my own self. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. The rest refused.
