✧ Abū al-ʿĀliyah came to me, I and a companion of mine, and said: "Come, for you two are younger and more retentive of hadith than I." He took us until we came to Naṣr ibn ʿĀṣim al-Laythī and said: "Relate to these two your hadith." Naṣr said: ʿUqbah ibn Mālik, who was of his clan, related to us: The Messenger of God ﷺ sent out a raiding party, and they raided a people. A man from the people fled, and a man from the raiding party followed him with his sword drawn. The fugitive from the people said: "I am a Muslim," but he paid no heed to it and struck him and killed him. The report reached the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he spoke harshly. It reached the killer, and while the Messenger of God ﷺ was delivering a sermon, the killer said: "O Messenger of God, by God, he only said what he said to seek protection from being killed." The Messenger of God ﷺ turned away from him and from those in front of him among the people and resumed his sermon. Then he said a second time: "O Messenger of God, by God, he only said what he said to seek protection from being killed." The Messenger of God ﷺ turned away from him and from those in front of him among the people and resumed his sermon. Then he could not refrain from saying a third time: "By God, O Messenger of God, he only said what he said to seek protection from being killed." The Messenger of God ﷺ turned to him, displeasure evident on his face, then said: "God ﷻ has refused to accept my intercession for one who kills a believer." He said it three times.
