✧ I came to Damascus intending to go on a military expedition, so I went to 'Abd al-Malik to greet him. I found him in a dome on a bed near the standing person, and beneath him were two rows. I greeted him and sat down. He said to me, 'O Ibn Shihāb, do you know what was in Jerusalem on the morning 'Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib was killed?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Come.' I arose from behind the people until I came behind the dome. He turned his face toward me and leaned over me and said, 'What was it?' I said, 'No stone was lifted from Jerusalem except that blood was found beneath it.' He said, 'No one remains who knows this except me and you. Let no one hear it from you.' I did not narrate it until he died, and the report is mursal.
