✧ Umar fought the polytheists in the mosque of Makkah, and he kept fighting them from morning until the sun was above his head. He said: He became exhausted and sat down. Then a man entered upon him wearing a red cloak and a Qumisi shirt, handsome of face. He came and dispersed them, saying: 'What do you want from this man?' They said: 'By Allah, nothing except that he has apostatized.' He said: 'What an excellent man, he chose a religion for himself. Leave him and what he chose for himself. Do you think Banu 'Adi would be pleased if Umar were killed? No, by Allah, Banu 'Adi would not be pleased.' He said: And Umar said that day: 'O enemies of Allah! By Allah, if we reached three hundred, we would drive you out of it.' I said to my father afterwards: 'Who was that man who turned them away from you that day?' He said: 'That was al-'As b. Wa'il, Abu 'Amr b. al-'As.'
