أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْقَاضِي بِمَرْوَ ثنا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَابِقٍ ثنا مَالِكُ بْنُ مِغْوَلٍ عَنْ أَبِي الشَّعْثَاءِ الْكِنْدِيِّ عَنْ مُرَّةَ الطَّيِّبِ قَالَ

جَاءَ أَبُو سُفْيَانَ بْنُ حَرْبٍ إِلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَقَالَ مَا بَالُ هَذَا الْأَمْرُ فِي أَقَلِّ قُرَيْشٍ قِلَّةً وَأَذَلِّهَا ذَلَّةً يَعْنِي أَبَا بَكْرٍ ؟ وَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ شِئْتُ لَأَمْلَأَنَّهَا عَلَيْهِ خَيْلًا وَرِجَالًا فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ «لَطَالَمَا عَادَيْتَ الْإِسْلَامَ وَأَهْلَهُ يَا أَبَا سُفْيَانَ فَلَمْ يَضُرَّهُ شَيْئًا إِنَّا وَجَدْنَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ لَهَا أَهْلًا» سنده صحيح

Translation

✧ Abu Sufyan b. Harb came to Ali b. Abi Talib and said, 'Why is this matter in the hands of the least numerous and most humiliated of Quraysh,' meaning Abu Bakr? 'By Allah, if I wished, I would fill it against him with cavalry and infantry.' Ali said, 'For a long time you have been hostile to Islam and its people, O Abu Sufyan, but it has not harmed it at all. We found Abu Bakr worthy of it.' Its chain is authentic.
