✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Follow in the footsteps of those who came after me, namely Abu Bakr and Umar, and seek guidance from the teachings of Ammar. Hold onto the covenant of Ibn Umme Abd. This is a hadith for the sake of narrating the virtues of the two honorable companions, and this chain of narration has been established from Ath-Thawri and Mas'ar Yahya al-Himmani. It has also been established from Mas'ar and Wakie', as well as Hafs ibn Umar al-Ayli. Then, [this hadith] was summarized in its narration from Ibn Uyaynah al-Humaidi and others. This chain of narration was established from Ibn Uyaynah to Ishaq bin Isa bin At-Tabbaa'. Thus, the authenticity of this hadith has been confirmed even though they did not mention it specifically, and we have found a supporting witness for it through a reliable chain of narration from Abdullah ibn Mas'ood."

machine translationI asked my father about a hadith narrated by al-Thawrī from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, from Hilāl, the freed slave of Ribʿī, from Ribʿī, from Ḥudhayfah, raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ): "Follow the two who come after me." Zāʾidah and others narrated it from ʿAbd al-Malik, from Ribʿī, from Ḥudhayfah, raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ). Which of the two is more authentic (aṣaḥḥ)? He said: What al-Thawrī said, for he added a man and transmitted the hadith well.
