✧ When the verse was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ: {Indeed, those who lower their voices in the presence of the Messenger of Allah—those are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for righteousness} [al-Hujurat 3], Abu Bakr said, “I resolved upon myself that I would not speak to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except as one confiding a secret.”
Notes
machine translationThis is a hadith with a sound chain (ṣaḥīḥ al-isnād), and the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhārī and Muslim) did not include it in their collections. Ḥuṣayn b. ʿUmar is very weak (wāhin).

machine translationWe do not know of this hadith being narrated from the Prophet ﷺ with a connected chain except from Abū Bakr, may God have mercy on him. Ḥuṣayn b. ʿUmar narrated hadiths that no one corroborated him on. As for those above Ḥuṣayn, Mukhāriq is well known, and as for those above him, there is no need to describe them because of their eminence.
machine translationḤuṣayn has other hadiths besides this one, and most of his hadiths are broken-chained (muʿḍalāt); he is alone in narrating from everyone he narrates from.
machine translationWe do not know of this hadith being narrated from the Prophet ﷺ with a connected chain except from Abū Bakr, may God have mercy on him. Ḥuṣayn b. ʿUmar narrated hadiths that no one corroborated him on. We mentioned this hadith despite the weakness of Ḥuṣayn only because it is not narrated from the Prophet ﷺ with a connected chain except through this route, and for that reason we mentioned it.
in المستدرك على الصحيحين, p. 4475 - Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥākim
machine translationThis hadith has an authentic chain of transmission (ṣaḥīḥ al-isnād), though they did not record it.
