أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُؤَمَّلِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عِيسَى ثنا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الشَّعْرَانِيُّ ثنا يُوسُفُ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ وَنُعَيْمُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ قَالَا ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ أَخْبَرَنِي عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي حُسَيْنٍ الْقُرَشِيُّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ
لَمَّا وُضِعَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ عَلَى سَرِيرِهِ فَتَكَنَّفَهُ النَّاسُ يَدْعُونَ لَهُ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ فَجَاءَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَقَالَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ لَأَظُنُّ أَنْ يَجْعَلَكَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى مَعَ صَاحِبَيْكَ وَذَلِكَ أَنِّي كُنْتُ أَكْثَرَ أَنْ أَسْمَعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «ذَهَبْتُ أَنَا وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَدَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَخَرَجْتُ أَنَا وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ» وَإِنِّي كُنْتُ أَظُنُّ أَنْ يَجْعَلَكَ اللَّهُ مَعَهُمَا
Translation

✧ When 'Umar b. al-Khattab was placed on his bier, the people gathered around him, supplicating for him, and I was among them. Then 'Ali b. Abi Talib came and said: "I used to think that Allah the Exalted would place you with your two companions. That is because I used to hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say most often: 'I went, with Abu Bakr and 'Umar; I entered, with Abu Bakr and 'Umar; I came out, with Abu Bakr and 'Umar.' And I used to think that Allah would place you with them."
