✧ I asked Khawwat b. Jubayr al-Ansari about God's sacrifice, which of the two it was. He said: Ishmael. When Ishmael reached seven years, Abraham saw in a dream in his dwelling in Syria that he was sacrificing Ishmael, so he rode to him upon al-Buraq until he came to him and found him with his mother. He took him by the hand and went off with him as he was commanded. Satan came to him in the likeness of a man he recognized and said, "O Abraham, where are you heading?" Abraham said, "For my need." He said, "You intend to sacrifice Ishmael?" Abraham said, "Have you seen a father sacrifice his child?" He said, "Yes, you." Abraham said, "And why?" He said, "You claim that God commanded you to do that." Abraham said, "If God commanded me, we obey God and I do well." So he turned away from him. Iblis came to Hagar and said, "Where has Abraham gone with your son?" She said, "He went for his need." He said, "He intends to sacrifice him." She said, "Have you seen a father sacrifice his child?" He said, "He claims that God commanded him to do that." She said, "He has done well to obey God." Then he caught up with Ishmael and said, "O Ishmael, where is your father taking you?" He said, "For his need." He said, "He is taking you to sacrifice you." He said, "Have you ever seen a father sacrifice his child?" He said, "Yes, he." He said, "And why?" He said, "He claims that God commanded him to do that." Ishmael said, "He has done well to obey his Lord." He said, "He set out with him until he brought him to Mina where he was commanded, then to the place of slaughtering the sacrificial camels today. He said, 'My son, God has commanded me to sacrifice you.' Ishmael said, 'Obey, for obedience to your Lord is all good.' Then Ishmael said, 'Did you inform my mother of this?' He said, 'No.' He said, 'You did right. I fear she would grieve. But when you bring the knife near my throat, turn away from me, for it is more likely that you will be patient and not see me.' So Abraham did that, and he began to cut his throat, but the cutting was on copper; the blade did not bite. He sharpened it twice or three times on a stone, all that while unable to cut. Abraham said, 'This matter is from God,' and raised his head. There was a mountain goat standing before him. Abraham said, 'Rise, my son, for your ransom has come down.' So he slaughtered it there at Mina. What is wrong with al-Waqidi and the sound collections?
