✧ The companions of the elephant advanced until they drew near Makkah, and ‘Abd al-Muttalib met them and said to their king, “What has brought you to us? We have nothing for you, O our Lord. Did You not send us so that we might bring You whatever You wanted?” He said, “I was told about this House which no one enters except that he is safe, so I came to frighten its people.” He said, “We will bring you whatever you want, so go back.” But he refused except to enter it, and he went on advancing toward it. ‘Abd al-Muttalib stayed behind and stood on a mountain, saying, “I will not witness the destruction of this House and its people.” Then he said: “O Allah, every deity has a sacred place, so protect Your sacred place; let their cunning never overcome Your plan. O Allah, if You act, then command whatever You will.” Then birds in flocks, like a cloud, approached from the direction of the sea until they overshadowed them—the birds that Allah, Exalted is He, mentioned: {Striking them with stones of baked clay} [al-Fil:4]. He said: The elephant began to bellow loudly, {and He made them like eaten straw}.
