حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ صَالِحِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ وَالْحَسَنُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ قَالَا ثنا السَّرِيُّ بْنُ خُزَيْمَةَ ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْمُقْرِئُ ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ ثنا عَيَّاشُ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ الْقِتْبَانِيُّ عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ هِلَالٍ الصَّدَفِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ
أَتَى رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَقْرِئْنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «اقْرَأْ ثَلَاثًا مِنْ ذَوَاتِ الرَّاءِ» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ كَبِرَتْ سِنِّي وَاشْتَدَّ قَلْبِي وَغَلُظَ لِسَانِي قَالَ «اقْرَأْ ثَلَاثًا مِنْ ذَوَاتِ حم» فَقَالَ مِثْلَ مَقَالَتِهِ الْأُولَى فَقَالَ «اقْرَأْ ثَلَاثًا مِنَ الْمُسَبِّحَاتِ» فَقَالَ مِثْلَ مَقَالَتِهِ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَقْرِئْنِي سُورَةً جَامِعَةً فَأَقْرَأَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ {إِذَا زُلْزِلَتْ} [الزلزلة 1] حَتَّى فَرَغَ مِنْهَا فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لَا أَزِيدُ عَلَيْهِ أَبَدًا ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَفْلَحَ الرُّوَيْجِلُ» ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ مَا يُقِيمُهُ

✧ A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “Teach me to recite, O Messenger of Allah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, “Recite three of the ones that begin with al-Ra’.” The man said, “I have grown old, my heart has hardened, and my tongue has become thick.” He said, “Recite three of those that begin with Ha-Mim.” He said the same as his first statement. He said, “Recite three of the Musabbihat.” He said the same thing. Then the man said, “O Messenger of Allah, teach me a comprehensive surah.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught him {When the earth is shaken} [al-Zalzalah:1] until he finished it. The man said, “By the One who sent you with the truth, I will never add anything to it.” Then the man turned away, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The little man has succeeded.” Then he mentioned what would preserve him.
