حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْفَضْلِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْمُزَكِّي إِمْلَاءً ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ

سَأَلْتُ اللَّهَ مَسْأَلَةً وَدِدْتُ أَنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ سَأَلْتُهُ ذَكَرْتُ رُسُلَ رَبِّي فَقُلْتُ يَا رَبِّ سَخَّرْتَ لِسُلَيْمَانَ الرِّيحَ وَكَلَّمْتَ مُوسَى فَقَالَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى أَلَمْ أَجِدْكَ يَتِيمًا فَآوَيْتُكَ وَضَالًّا فَهَدَيْتُكَ وَعَائِلًا فَأَغْنَيْتُكَ؟ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَوَدِدْتُ أَنْ لَمْ أَسْأَلْهُ

Translation

✧ I asked Allah for something that I wish I had not asked. I mentioned the messengers of my Lord and said: "O Lord, You subjected the wind to Solomon and You spoke to Moses." Then He, Blessed and Exalted, said: "Did I not find you an orphan and give you refuge, and found you lost and guided you, and found you poor and enriched you?" I said: "Yes," so I wished I had not asked Him.
