✧ {And We placed in the hearts of those who followed him compassion and mercy, and monasticism which they innovated. We did not prescribe it for them except seeking the pleasure of Allah, but they did not observe it with its due observance. So We gave those who believed among them their reward, but many of them are defiantly disobedient.} [Al-Hadid 27] Ibn Mas'ud said: The Prophet ﷺ said to me, 'O Abdullah b. Mas'ud.' I replied, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah,' three times. He said, 'Do you know which handhold of faith is most trustworthy?' I said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'The most trustworthy handhold of faith is allegiance for the sake of Allah, loving for His sake and hating for His sake. O Abdullah b. Mas'ud.' I said, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah,' three times. He said, 'Do you know which people are best?' I said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'Indeed, the best of people are those best in deeds when they have understanding in their religion. O Abdullah b. Mas'ud.' I said, 'At your service and at your command,' three times. He said, 'Do you know which people are most knowledgeable?' I said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'Indeed, the most knowledgeable of people are those most perceptive of the truth when people differ, even if he is deficient in deeds, even if he crawls on his backside. Those before us divided into seventy-two sects; three of them were saved and the rest perished. One sect confronted the kings and fought them for the religion of Allah and the religion of Jesus son of Mary until they were killed. A sect did not have the strength to confront the kings, so they remained among their people and called them to the religion of Allah and the religion of Jesus son of Mary, and the kings killed them and sawed them with saws. A sect did not have the strength to confront the kings nor to remain among their people calling them to Allah and to the religion of Jesus son of Mary, so they wandered in the mountains and became monks therein. They are the ones about whom Allah said: {and monasticism which they innovated. We did not prescribe it for them except seeking the pleasure of Allah, but they did not observe it with its due observance} [Al-Hadid 27] up to His saying {defiantly disobedient} [Al-Hadid 27]. So the believers are those who believed in me and affirmed me, and the defiantly disobedient are those who disbelieved in me and rejected me.'
