حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ ثنا أَبِي ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ وَأَبُو مُسْلِمٍ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ وَاقِدُ الْحَرَّانِيُّ قَالَا ثنا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ثنا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ

لَمَّا قَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ سُورَةَ الرَّحْمَنِ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ حَتَّى فَرَغَ قَالَ مَا لِي أَرَاكُمْ سُكُوتًا لَلْجِنُّ كَانُوا أَحْسَنَ مِنْكُمْ رَدًّا مَا قَرَأْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ مَرَّةٍ {فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ} [الرحمن 13] إِلَّا قَالُوا وَلَا بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ نِعْمَتِكَ رَبَّنَا نُكَذِّبُ فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ «صَحِيحٌ عَلَى شَرْطِ الشَّيْخَيْنِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ» على شرط البخاري ومسلم

✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited Surah al-Rahman to his companions until he finished, he said: 'Why do I see you silent? The jinn were better than you in response. I did not recite to them even once {So which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?} [al-Rahman: 13] except that they said: And not any of your blessings, our Lord, do we deny, so to You is praise.' Authentic according to the conditions of the two shaykhs, but they did not record it. According to the condition of al-Bukhari and Muslim.

A group of weak (ḍaʿīf) narrators, whom I have mentioned in this book of mine, stole it and narrated it from al-Walīd. Among them are Sulaymān b. Aḥmad al-Wāsiṭī, ʿAlī b. Jamīl al-Raqqī, ʿUmar b. Mālik al-Bakrī al-Baṣrī, and Barakah b. Muḥammad al-Ḥalabī. The hadith belongs to Hishām.
