✧ When we returned from al-Ḥudaybiyyah, the companions of Muḥammad ﷺ were mixed with grief and dejection, since they had slaughtered their sacrificial animals in their places. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “A verse has been sent down to me that is more beloved to me than the whole world—three times.” We said, “What is it, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, and he recited: “Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory, that Allah may forgive you your former and latter sins and complete His favor upon you and guide you to a straight path” [al-Fatḥ: 2], to the end of the two verses. We said, “May it be pleasant for you, O Messenger of Allah. So what is for us?” Then he recited: “That He may admit the believing men and believing women into gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide therein forever, and to remove from them their misdeeds—and that is, in the sight of Allah, a great triumph” [al-Fatḥ: 5]. When we came to Khaybar, they saw the army of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, meaning his troops, and they fled in retreat to the fortress. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Khaybar is ruined. Indeed, when we descend upon the courtyard of a people, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.” Al-Ḥakam b. Mālik is weak; he adduced it as a corroborating report.
