✧ I heard 'Awf b. Malik al-Ashja'i say: We camped with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at a place. I woke up during the night and saw nothing in the army taller than the back of my saddle; every person and his camel had stuck to the ground. I got up and walked among the people until I reached the resting place of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but he was not there. I placed my hand on the bed and found it cold. I went out among the people saying: {Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return} [Al-Baqarah 156], "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been taken away!" until I left the entire army. Then I saw a black shape and threw a stone at it. I went toward the black shape, and there were Mu'adh b. Jabal and Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah, and before us was a sound like the rumble of a mill or like the sound of pebbles when the wind hits them. Some of us said to others: "O people, stay put until morning or until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ comes to you." He said: We waited as long as Allah willed, then he called out: "Are Mu'adh b. Jabal, Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah, and 'Awf b. Malik there?" We said: "Yes." He came toward us, and we went out walking with him, not asking him about anything nor telling him anything. He sat on his bed and said: "Do you know what my Lord has offered me tonight?" We said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "He offered me a choice between admitting half of my community to Paradise and intercession, and I chose intercession." We said: "O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to make us among its people." He said: "It is for every Muslim."
