✧ Abu Bakr al-Siddiq delivered a sermon to us. He praised Allah and extolled Him with what He deserves, then said: "I enjoin you to fear Allah, and to extol Him with what He deserves, and to combine hope with fear. For Allah praised Zakariyya and his household, saying: {Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were humbly submissive to Us} [Al-Anbiya: 90]. Then know, O servants of Allah, that Allah has taken your souls as a pledge for His right, and has taken your covenants for that, and has purchased from you the little that is perishable for the much that is enduring. This is the Book of Allah among you; its light is not extinguished, and its wonders do not cease. So seek light from its light, and take counsel from its Book, and seek light from it for the day of darkness. Indeed, He created you only for His worship and appointed over you noble recording angels who know what you do. Then know, O servants of Allah, that you go forth in the morning and return in the evening within a term whose knowledge is hidden from you. If you are able that your terms come to an end while you are in the work of Allah, then do so; and you will never be able to do that except with Allah's help. So race within the respite of your terms before your terms come to an end and He returns you to the evil of your deeds. For there are people who made their terms for other than themselves and forgot themselves. I forbid you to be like them. So hasten, hasten; then deliverance, deliverance. For behind you is a pursuer who is swift in his passing and quick."
