حَدَّثَنِي الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ الْإِسْفِرَايِينِيُّ ثنا عُمَيْرُ بْنُ مِرْدَاسٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ الْغَنَوِيُّ ثنا حَكِيمُ بْنُ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ مَوْلَى عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَغْزُوَ غَزَاةً لَهُ قَالَ فَدَعَا جَعْفَرًا فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَتَخَلَّفَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ فَقَالَ لَا أَتَخَلَّفُ بَعْدَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَبَدًا قَالَ فَدَعَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَعَزَمَ عَلَيَّ لَمَا تَخَلَّفْتُ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَتَكَلَّمَ قَالَ فَبَكَيْتُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا يُبْكِيكَ يَا عَلِيُّ؟ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يُبْكِينِي خِصَالٌ غَيْرُ وَاحِدَةٍ تَقُولُ قُرَيْشٌ غَدًا مَا أَسْرَعَ مَا تَخَلَّفَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَمِّهِ وَخَذَلَهُ وَيُبْكِينِي خَصْلَةٌ أُخْرَى كُنْتُ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَتَعَرَّضَ لِلْجِهَادِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ لِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَقُولُ {وَلَا يَطَئُونَ مَوْطِئًا يَغِيظُ الْكُفَّارَ وَلَا يَنَالُونَ مِنْ عَدُوٍّ نَيْلًا} إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ فَكُنْتُ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَتَعَرَّضَ لِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَمَّا قَوْلُكَ تَقُولُ قُرَيْشٌ مَا أَسْرَعَ مَا تَخَلَّفَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَمِّهِ وَخَذَلَهُ فَإِنَّ لَكَ بِي أُسْوَةً قَدْ قَالُوا سَاحِرٌ وَكَاهِنٌ وَكَذَّابٌ أَمَا تَرْضَى أَنْ تَكُونَ مِنِّي بِمَنْزِلَةِ هَارُونَ مِنْ مُوسَى إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَا نَبِيَّ بَعْدِي؟ وَأَمَّا قَوْلُكَ أَتَعَرَّضُ لِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ فَهَذِهِ أَبْهَارٌ مِنْ فُلْفُلٍ جَاءَنَا مِنَ الْيَمَنِ فَبِعْهُ وَاسْتَمْتِعْ بِهِ أَنْتَ وَفَاطِمَةُ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَكُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ فَإِنَّ الْمَدِينَةَ لَا تَصْلُحُ إِلَّا بِي أَوْ بِكَ»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to go on a raid of his. He called Ja‘far and ordered him to stay behind in Madinah. He said, “I will never stay behind after you, O Messenger of Allah.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called me and adjured me to stay behind before I could speak. I wept, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “What makes you weep, O ‘Ali?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, more than one thing makes me weep: Tomorrow Quraysh will say, ‘How quickly he stayed behind from his cousin and abandoned him.’ And another thing that makes me weep is that I wanted to expose myself to jihad in the path of Allah, for Allah says {Nor do they tread any ground that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they inflict upon an enemy any infliction} to the end of the verse; I wanted to expose myself to Allah’s bounty.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “As for your saying that Quraysh will say, ‘How quickly he stayed behind from his cousin and abandoned him,’ you have in me a model: they have said ‘sorcerer, soothsayer, liar.’ Are you not pleased to be to me as Harun was to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me? As for your saying that you wanted to expose yourself to Allah’s bounty, here are measures of pepper that came to us from Yemen; sell it and enjoy it, you and Fatimah, until Allah brings you from His bounty, for Madinah is only set right by me or by you.”
