✧ When the verse “Those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend them in the way of Allah” [At-Tawbah: 34] was revealed, it weighed heavily on the Muslims. They said, “None of us can leave wealth for his child to remain after him.” Umar said, “I will relieve you.” So they went, and Umar went, and Thawban followed him. They came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Umar said, “O Prophet of Allah, this verse has weighed heavily on your companions.” The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, “Allah did not make zakat obligatory except to purify what remains of your wealth through it, and He made inheritance obligatory only in wealth that remains after you.” Umar then said takbir, and the Prophet ﷺ said to him, “Shall I not tell you of the best thing a man hoards? It is a righteous woman: when he looks at her she pleases him, when he commands her she obeys him, and when he is absent she protects [his honor].”
