✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Makkah, some people of Quraysh came to him and said, 'O Muhammad, we are your allies and your people, and some of our slaves have joined you. They have no desire for Islam; they only fled from work, so return them to us.' He consulted Abu Bakr about their matter, and Abu Bakr said, 'They have spoken the truth, O Messenger of Allah.' Then he said to 'Umar, 'What do you think?' 'Umar said the like of Abu Bakr's words. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, 'O company of Quraysh, Allah will surely send upon you a man from among you whose heart Allah has tested for faith, and he will strike your necks for the religion.' Abu Bakr said, 'Is it I, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'No.' 'Umar said, 'Is it I, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'No, but it is the one mending the sandal in the mosque.' He had given his sandal to 'Ali to mend it. Then he said, 'Indeed, I heard him say: Do not lie about me, for whoever lies about me will enter the Fire.'
