Notes

machine translationThis is a ḥadīth with a sound chain (ṣaḥīḥ al-isnād), though the two [al-Bukhārī and Muslim] did not record it, and a group have made it mawqūf (halted at a Companion).

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyá b. Sharaf al-Nawawī

machine translationThe correct version is the mawqūf narration, and the narration that raises it to the Prophet (marfūʿ) is weak (ḍaʿīf).

  • Aḥmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasāʾī

machine translationHe favoured the stopped (mawqūf) version.

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationThis ḥadīth was raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ) by ʿAṭāʾ b. al-Sāʾib in the narration of a group from him, and it was also narrated from him as mawqūf, which is more sound (aṣaḥḥ).

  • Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd

machine translationAs for the route of ʿAṭāʾ: ʿAṭāʾ is among the trustworthy (thiqāt), but he became confused (ikhtalaṭa) at the end of his life. Ibn Maʿīn said: whoever heard from him early, it is sound, and whoever heard from him later, it is nothing. All who narrated from him did so during the confusion, except Shuʿbah and Sufyān. What Jarīr and others heard from him is not from his sound ḥadīth.
