✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him as a collector. His father said: "Do not leave until you make a covenant with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." When he wanted to leave, he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "O Qays, do not come on the Day of Resurrection with a camel on your neck that has a grumble, or a cow that has a moo, or a sheep that has a bleat, and do not be like Abū Righāl." Saʿd said: "Who is Abū Righāl?" He said: "A collector whom Ṣāliḥ sent. He found a man in al-Ṭāʾif with a small flock of about one hundred thin sheep except one sheep and a suckling boy with no mother, whose sustenance was the milk of that sheep. The owner of the sheep said: 'Who are you?' He said: 'I am the messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He welcomed him and said: 'This is my flock, take whatever you like.' He looked at the milking sheep and said: 'This one.' The man said: 'This boy, as you see, has no food or drink other than it.' He said: 'If you love milk, I love it too.' He said: 'Take two sheep instead of it,' but he refused. He kept increasing and offering until he offered five thin sheep instead of it, but he refused. When he saw that, he took his bow and shot him, killing him. He said: 'It is not fitting for anyone to bring this news to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ before me.' The owner of the sheep came to Ṣāliḥ the Prophet ﷺ and informed him. Ṣāliḥ said: 'O Allah, curse Abū Righāl. O Allah, curse Abū Righāl.' Saʿd b. ʿUbādah said: 'O Messenger of Allah, excuse Qays from the water-giving duty.'"
