✧ In the early days of the Prophet ﷺ, when one of us was on his deathbed, we would inform the Prophet ﷺ, and he would attend and seek forgiveness for him until he died. Then the Prophet ﷺ and those with him would leave until he was buried. Sometimes this waiting was prolonged for the Prophet ﷺ. When we feared that this was burdensome for him, some of the people said to others: 'If only we did not inform the Prophet ﷺ about anyone until he had died; then after he died we would inform him, and there would be no burden or waiting for him in that.' So we did that: we would inform him of the deceased after he had died, and he would come and pray over him. Sometimes he would leave, and sometimes he would stay until the deceased was buried. We continued on that for a while, then we said: 'If only the Prophet ﷺ did not have to go out, and we carried our funeral to him so that he could pray over it at his house, that would be more convenient for him.' So we did that, and that has been the practice until today.
