    سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الطِّيَرَةِ فَقَالَ: هُوَ شَيْءٌ تَجِدُونَهُ فِي صُدُورِكُمْ فَلَا يَصُدَّنَّكُمْ، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ قَوْمًا يَأْتُونَ الْكُهَّانَ ! فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " لَا تَأْتُوهُمْ

    ✧ I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about bird omens, and he said: “It is something you find in your hearts, so let it not hinder you.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah, there are people who go to soothsayers.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do not go to them.”

    صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى جَنْبِي، فَقُلْتُ: يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ ! فَرَمَانِي الْقَوْمُ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ، فَقُلْتُ: وَاثُكْلَ أُمِّيَاهْ، مَا لِي أَرَاكُمْ تَنْظُرُونَ إِلَيَّ وَأَنَا أُصَلِّي ! فَجَعَلُوا يَضْرِبُونَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ عَلَى أَفْخَاذِهِمْ يُصَمِّتُونِي، فَلَمَّا قَضَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَاتَهُ، فَبِأَبِي وَأُمِّي مَا رَأَيْتُ قَبْلَهُ وَلَا بَعْدَهُ أَحَدًا أَحْسَنَ تَعْلِيمًا مِنْهُ، وَاللهِ مَا كَهَرَنِي وَلَا سَبَّنِي وَلَا ضَرَبَنِي، وَلَكِنَّهُ قَالَ لِي: إِنَّ صَلَاتَنَا هَذِهِ لَا يَصْلُحُ فِيهَا شَيْءٌ مِنْ كَلَامِ النَّاسِ، إِنَّمَا هُوَ الصَّلَاةُ وَالتَّسْبِيحُ وَالتَّحْمِيدُ وَقِرَاءَةُ الْقُرْآنِ "، أَوْ كَالَّذِي قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، وَكَانَتْ لِي غَنَمٌ تَرْعَى بَيْنَ أُحُدٍ وَالْجَوَّانِيَّةِ فِيهَا جَارِيَةٌ لِي، فَاطَّلَعْتُهَا ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَإِذَا الذِّئْبُ قَدْ ذَهَبَ مِنْهَا بِشَاةٍ، وَأَنَا مِنْ بَنِي آدَمَ آسَفُ كَمَا يَأْسَفُونَ، فَرَفَعْتُ يَدِي فَصَكَكْتُهَا صَكَّةً، فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَعَظَّمَ ذَلِكَ عَلَيَّ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَفَلَا أُعْتِقُهَا ؟ قَالَ: " ادْعُهَا "، فَدَعَوْتُهَا. قَالَ: فَقَالَ لَهَا: " أَيْنَ اللهُ ؟ "، قَالَتْ: فِي السَّمَاءِ، قَالَ: " مَنْ أَنَا ؟ " قَالَتْ: أَنْتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " أَعْتِقْهَا؛ فَإِنَّهَا مُؤْمِنَةٌ "، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ فِينَا قَوْمًا يَخُطُّونَ ! فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " قَدْ كَانَ نَبِيٌّ مِنَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ يَخُطُّ، فَمَنْ وَافَقَ خَطَّهُ فَذَاكَ "، قُلْتُ: إِنَّ فِينَا قَوْمًا يَتَطَيَّرُونَ، قَالَ: " هُوَ شَيْءٌ يَجِدُونَهُ فِي صُدُورِهِمْ، وَلَكِنْ لَا يَصُدَّنَّهُمْ "، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ فِينَا قَوْمًا يَأْتُونَ الْكُهَّانَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " فَلَا تَأْتُوهُمْ

    ✧ I prayed with the Prophet ﷺ, and a man next to me sneezed, so I said: “May Allah have mercy on you.” The people stared at me, and I said: “Woe to my mother! Why are you looking at me while I am praying?” They began striking their hands on their thighs to silence me. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, by my father and mother, I had never seen before or after him anyone better at teaching than him. By Allah, he did not scowl at me, insult me, or strike me, but he said to me: “In this prayer of ours, nothing of people's speech is fitting; it is only prayer, glorification, praise, and recitation of the Qur'an” – or something like what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said. I had sheep grazing between Uhud and al-Jawwaniyyah, with a slave girl of mine among them. One day I checked on them and saw that a wolf had taken one of the sheep. I am a human being and felt regret as people do, so I raised my hand and slapped her hard. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him, and he made it seem grave to me. I said: “O Messenger of Allah, should I not free her?” He said: “Call her.” So I called her. He said to her: “Where is Allah?” She said: “In the sky.” He said: “Who am I?” She said: “You are the Messenger of Allah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: “Free her, for she is a believer.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah, among us are people who draw lines (for divination).” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A prophet among the prophets used to draw lines; whoever matches his line, that is it.” I said: “Among us are people who practice bird omens.” He said: “It is something they find in their hearts, but it should not hinder them.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah, among us are people who go to soothsayers.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do not go to them.”
