58. ✧ Wathilah b. al-Asqa' from the Prophet ﷺ

   " أُعْطِيتُ مَكَانَ التَّوْرَاةِ السَّبْعَ، وَمَكَانَ الزَّبُورِ الْمِئِينَ، وَمَكَانَ الْإِنْجِيلِ الْمَثَانِيَ، وَفُضِّلْتُ بِالْمُفَصَّلِ

   ✧ I was given the seven long surahs in place of the Torah, the ones of a hundred verses in place of the Psalms, the oft-repeated ones in place of the Gospel, and I was favored with the detailed surahs.

   رَأَيْتُ وَاثِلَةَ بْنَ الْأَسْقَعِ وَكَانَتْ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ " يُصَلِّي فِي مَسْجِدِ دِمَشْقَ وَعَلَيْهِ نَعْلَانِ، فَبَزَقَ تَحْتَ قَدَمِهِ الْيُسْرَى ثُمَّ عَرَكَهَا بِالْأَرْضِ "، فَلَمَّا صَلَّى قُلْتُ: أَتَصْنَعُ هَذَا وَأَنْتَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ! فَقَالَ: هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَلَ

   ✧ I saw Wathilah b. al-Asqaʿ — and he was a Companion — praying in the mosque of Damascus wearing two sandals. He spat beneath his left foot, then rubbed it into the ground. When he finished praying, I said: 'You do this while you are among the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ?' He said: 'Thus I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ do.'
