113. ✧ Ibn Labid, a man from the Ansar

    " هَذَا أَوَانُ ذَهَابِ الْعِلْمِ "، أَوْ: " هَذَا أَوَانُ انْقِطَاعِ الْعِلْمِ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ لَبِيدٍ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، كَيْفَ وَفِينَا كِتَابُ اللهِ نُعَلِّمُهُ أَبْنَاءَنَا وَيُعَلِّمُهُ أَبْنَاؤُنَا أَبْنَاءَهُمْ ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ يَا ابْنَ لَبِيدٍ، إِنْ كُنْتُ لَأَحْسَبُكَ أَعْقَلَ رَجُلٍ بِالْمَدِينَةِ، أَوَلَيْسَ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى قَدْ أُوتُوا التَّوْرَاةَ وَالْإِنْجِيلَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنْتَفِعُوا مِنْ ذَلِكَ بِشَيْءٍ ؟

    ✧ This is the time of the departure of knowledge, or: This is the time of the severing of knowledge. Ibn Labid said: O Messenger of God, how [can that be] when the Book of God is among us, we teach it to our children and our children teach it to their children? The Prophet ﷺ said: May your mother be bereaved of you, O Ibn Labid! I certainly considered you the most intelligent man in Madinah. Have not the Jews and Christians been given the Torah and the Gospel, and yet they have not benefited from them in anything?
