55. Zayd b. Ḥārithah's detachment to al-Qaradah

   سَرِيَّةُ زَيْدِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ إلَى الْقَرَدَةِ [ إصَابَةُ زَيْدٍ لِلْعِيرِ وَإِفْلَاتُ الرِّجَالِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَسَرِيَّةُ زَيْدِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ الَّتِي بَعَثَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِيهَا، حَيْنَ أَصَابَ عِيرَ قُرَيْشٍ، وَفِيهَا أَبُو سُفْيَانَ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، عَلَى الْقَرَدَةِ، مَاءٌ مِنْ مِيَاهِ نَجْدٍ. وَكَانَ مِنْ حَدِيثِهَا: أَنَّ قُرَيْشًا خَافُوا طَرِيقَهُمْ الَّذِي كَانُوا يَسْلُكُونَ إلَى الشَّأْمِ، حِينَ كَانَ مِنْ وَقْعَةِ بَدْرٍ مَا كَانَ، فَسَلَكُوا طَرِيقَ الْعِرَاقِ، فَخَرَجَ مِنْهُمْ تُجَّارٌ، فِيهِمْ: أَبُو سُفْيَانَ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، وَمَعَهُ فِضَّةٌ كَثِيرَةٌ، وَهِيَ عُظْمُ تِجَارَتِهِمْ، وَاسْتَأْجَرُوا رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي بَكْرِ بْنِ وَائِلٍ، يُقَالُ لَهُ: فُرَاتُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ يَدُلُّهُمْ فِي ذَلِكَ عَلَى الطَّرِيقِ. قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: فُرَاتُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ، مِنْ بَنِي عِجْلٍ، حَلِيفٌ لِبَنِي سَهْمٍ. قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَبَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَيْدَ بْنَ حَارِثَةَ فَلَقِيَهُمْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ الْمَاءِ، فَأَصَابَ تِلْكَ الْعِيرَ وَمَا فِيهَا، وَأَعْجَزَهُ الرِّجَالُ، فَقَدِمَ بِهَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ.

   ✧ The detachment of Zayd b. Ḥārithah to al-Qaradah [Zayd's capture of the caravan and the escape of the men] Ibn Isḥāq said: And the detachment of Zayd b. Ḥārithah, which the Messenger of God ﷺ sent him on, was when he seized the caravan of Quraysh, in which was Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb, at al-Qaradah, a watering place among the watering places of Najd. And of its account: Quraysh feared their route which they used to take to Syria, because of what had happened at the battle of Badr, so they took the route of Iraq, and some merchants of theirs set out, among them Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb, with him a great deal of silver, which was the bulk of their merchandise, and they hired a man of Banū Bakr b. Wāʾil, called Furāt b. Ḥayyān, to guide them on that route. Ibn Hishām said: Furāt b. Ḥayyān, of Banū ʿIjl, an ally of Banū Sahm. Ibn Isḥāq said: And the Messenger of God ﷺ sent Zayd b. Ḥārithah, and he met them at that watering place, and he seized that caravan and what was in it, and the men eluded him, and he brought it to the Messenger of God ﷺ.

   [ شِعْرُ حَسَّانَ فِي تَأْنِيبِ قُرَيْشٍ ] فَقَالَ حَسَّانُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ بَعْدَ أُحُدٍ فِي غَزْوَةِ بَدْرٍ الْآخِرَةِ يُؤَنِّبُ قُرَيْشًا لِأَخْذِهِمْ تِلْكَ الطَّرِيقِ: دَعُو فَلَجَاتِ الشَّامِ قَدْ حَالَ دُونَهَا جَلَّادٌ كَأَفْوَاهِ الْمَخَاضِ الْأَوَارِكِ بِأَيْدِي رِجَالٍ هَاجَرُوا نَحْوَ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَنْصَارِهِ حَقَّا وَأَيْدِي الْمَلَائِكِ إذَا سَلَكَتْ لِلْغَوْرِ مِنْ بَطْنِ عَالِجٍ فَقُولَا لَهَا لَيْسَ الطَّرِيقُ هُنَالِكَ قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَهَذِهِ الْأَبْيَاتُ فِي أَبْيَاتٍ لِحَسَّانَ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ، نَقَضَهَا عَلَيْهِ أَبُو سُفْيَانَ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ، وَسَنَذْكُرُهَا وَنَقِيضَتُهَا إنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ ( فِي ) مَوْضِعِهَا

   ✧ [Ḥassān's poetry in rebuking Quraysh] Ḥassān b. Thābit said after Uḥud concerning the expedition of the latter Badr, rebuking Quraysh for taking that road: Leave the cultivated tracts of Syria, for before them has come a fierce fighter like the mouths of she-camels heavy with young, in the hands of men who emigrated toward their Lord and His true helpers, and the hands of the angels. If you travel toward the lowland from the interior of ʿĀlij, then say to it: the road is not there. Ibn Hishām said: These verses are among the verses of Ḥassān b. Thābit, against which Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib composed a rebuttal. We shall mention them and his rebuttal, God willing, in their proper place.
