✧ “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hunayn passing through the people asking about the camp of Khālid b. al-Walīd. A drunkard was brought, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered those around him to strike him with whatever was in their hands, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw dust on him. Then later a drunkard was brought to Abū Bakr, and he sought to emulate their beating of him that day—or we sought to emulate it—and he struck forty lashes. Then ʿUmar struck forty.”

✧ “A drinker was brought to the Prophet ﷺ, and he ordered that he be beaten, so they beat him with whatever was in their hands. In the time of Abū Bakr, a drinker was brought, and he asked about the beating for it. We sought to emulate the beating we had administered to the drinker in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we estimated it at forty, so he beat him forty. Then ʿUmar beat eighty.”

✧ “The example of the believer when he is afflicted with fever or illness is like an iron that enters the fire, so its impurities depart and its purity remains.”
