26. Compassion
✧ From ʿĀʾisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, who said: A group of Jews entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'Poison be upon you.' ʿĀʾisha said, 'I understood it, so I said, "Upon you be poison and the curse."' She said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Gently, ʿĀʾisha. Allah loves gentleness in all matters." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you not hear what they said?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I said, 'And upon you.'"'
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever is deprived of gentleness is deprived of all good.'
✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, who said, “Whoever is given his share of gentleness has been given his share of good, and whoever is deprived of his share of gentleness has been deprived of his share of good. The heaviest thing in the believer’s balance on the Day of Rising is good character, and Allah detests the obscene and foul-mouthed.”
✧ The Prophet ﷺ said, “Overlook the slips of people of good character.”
✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, who said, “Roughness does not exist in anything except that it disgraces it, and Allah is gentle and loves gentleness.”
✧ Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was more modest than a virgin in her chamber, and when he disliked something we recognized it in his face.”
✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, who said, “Good guidance, a dignified bearing, and moderation are one of seventy parts of prophethood.”
'A'isha, may Allah be pleased with her, said, "I was on a camel which was somewhat intractable and the Prophet ﷺ remarked, 'You must be compassionate. Whenever there is compassion in something, it adorns it, and when it is removed from something it disgraces it."
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Beware of avarice, for it destroyed those before you: they shed their blood and severed their ties of kinship. Wrong action is darknesses on the Day of Rising.”
Kathir ibn 'Ubayd said, "I visited 'A'isha, the Umm al-Mu'minin, may Allah be pleased with her. She said, 'Wait until I sew up my garment.' So I waited and said, 'Umm al-Mu'minin, when I go out, I will tell them that your enemy is miserliness.' She said, 'Look to your own business. There are no new clothes for anyone who does not wear shabby clothes.'"
✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, who said, “Allah is gentle and loves gentleness, and He gives for gentleness what He does not give for harshness.”
✧ The Prophet ﷺ said, “Make things easy and do not make them difficult; calm people and do not drive them away.”

✧ ʿAbdullah b. ʿAmr said, “A guest once stayed among the Banū Isrāʾīl, and in the house there was a bitch of theirs. They said, ‘O bitch, do not bark at our guest,’ but the puppies cried out in her belly. They mentioned that to a prophet of theirs, and he said, ‘The likeness of this is the likeness of a community that will come after you whose fools will overcome their learned ones.’”
